Does McDonald’s meat supplier, Finlar Fine Foods, or any of its sources sterilise any of its meat? If so, what is it sterilised with?

Our Answer

At McDonald’s South Africa (SA), food safety has been — and will continue to be — top priority. We have always used 100% pure chicken in our burgers, not ammonia-treated chicken. McDonald’s SA also complies with government requirements and food safety regulations. We also have our own food safety measures and standards in place throughout our supply chain to help ensure safe, high quality food to our customers. Each slaughter facility under the jurisdiction of the South African Meat Safety Act, will have a documented and approved program to reduce bacteria in chicken. While the actual program will vary by facility, they will involve several interventions to reduce bacteria. It should be noted that this process is done for all chicken carcasses, whether any of the meat ends up going to a McDonald’s supplier or not.
