McDonald’s South Africa (SA) chicken farmers keep the broiler chickens we use for our chicken products in climate-controlled barns to protect them against hot summers, cold winters, predators and disease. They have access to food and water through automatic feed systems and water lines, but they are not force fed by tubes. Farmers constantly monitor the barn environment to ensure that the equipment in their barns are working properly to control the temperature, humidity, light and ventilation at optimum levels for their birds. Typically, these barns do not have windows, so the intensity and duration of the light can be controlled. This is because the amount of light is thought to affect the chickens’ aggression and the risk of them injuring each other.
